FWHR Awards Dinner

Thank you to Fort Worth HR for inviting me to emcee the first ever FWHR Annual Awards Dinner! This important event allowed the HR community to recognize several leaders in our industry who are going above and beyond! Emerging HR Professional, HR Professional of the Year, as well as numerous certification achievers were named and recognized. I also got to tell some bad HR jokes. Seriously!

The biggest laugh of the night was when we were running low on time and I crumbled up one full page of jokes. I said “in the interest of time I’ll cut some more of these bad jokes, but in case you wanted to hear them…” and crumbled them into the mic. I think everyone was just happy to not have to hear more bad jokes! Ha!

If you havet he chance in the future to attend a FWHR Awards Dinner, go check it out! Wonderful people, beautiful setting, but most importantly we got to give thanks to our profession and to those who are standing out among our peers! Cheers FWHR to a great first ever Annual Awards Dinner!

CLO Apex

Do you ever feel like…wow…I’ve found my place and my people?

Do you ever think…yes…this is the place where I thrive and grow?

Do you ever realize…finally…this is what I’ve been looking for!

There are a lot of different ways to find that feeling, but few are as powerful as the communal feeling of sharing, learning, and growing together with a group of highly intelligent, highly caring, highly enthusiastic leaders of learning! I just got back from the Chief Learning Officer (CLO) Apex event in Orlando, FL hosted by Corinium Global Intelligence. Corinium believes in “Connected Thinking” and this is the best example of connecting leaders with thought that I have ever seen. To be in the room is great, to have a seat at the table is crucial, to stand in front of this group…is something few can experience.

I’m honored and humbled to have chaired this important event. With so many talented people in the world and so many wonderful leaders in the room, I am grateful, excited, and energized!

Biggest takeaways?

  • You are not alone! We all have similar challenges and it is okay to share with colleagues and peers outside your four walls.
  • Failure is not only okay…it is better for your learning trajectory. We learn more from fixing failures than from conferences or books.
  • Technology exists today with AI/VR that will blow your mind! We need to tap into it now to stay ahead of the curve in learning.
  • Connection does not end at the end of a conference. Keep the conversation going well beyond the last session.
  • Accountability is for leaders too. Find an accountabilibuddy and make a SMART plan to ensure you are each on track for your goals!

There are so many more incredible takeaways from this session but I can’t give it all away now can I? I hope to see you at the next CLO in June!

#HRSWC

Wow! What a great conference! Congratulations to #DallasHR and #HRSWC for the phenomenal conference this week in Fort Worth, TX. I had the distinct honor of speaking on core values and their importance in any organization. I was also able to learn from other experts, share with colleagues, and connect with like-minded professionals on topics that matter to every company.

The highlight was meeting Celebrity Chef Carla Hall! She was an engaging speaker and an exceptionally sweet person. So willing to share and be open about her authentic self. Thank you Carla, DallasHR, and everyone involved in making it a great conference. Can’t wait until next year!

Spring Art Fair in Dallas

I’m excited to be part of the Texas Visual Arts Association Spring Art Fair on Saturday, April 13 from 9am-6pm, at the Plaza of the Americas in downtown Dallas! There will be some amazing artists and some awesome artwork at great prices. I’ll also be doing tarot readings at my booth if you need some clarity around a situation in your life. Hope to see you then!

Light at the end of the tunnel…

Is that the light at the end of the tunnel…or is it just a train? Many people have said these words or had this thought, but until you feel it for yourself, it is just a funny saying.

For several years, and through multiple jobs, many of my close friends (and those co-workers who bridged the gap from co-worker to colleague) have encouraged me to consult. They ask me things like, “why are you here? Why are you doing this? You should go out on your own. You would be great at helping companies solve their problems. Oh and also…please take me with you!!!” A nice compliment but always a tenuous venture to consider. My career trajectory so far has been a series of upward transitions in companies where I succeeded at what they hired me to do, so they gave me more responsibility. New responsibilities were often outside of my comfort zone or area of expertise, but I am smart, determined, and successful, so these accomplishments led to more responsibilities…and so it goes. Does this sound like your journey, too?

I am happiest when I am able to come into a situation where something is broken, is moving slowly, is dysfunctional, is ineffective, is not getting the right results, or does not even yet exist. I have a unique ability to create or improve programs and processes, in order to turn them into something successful, profitable, engaging, and exciting. Well-oiled machines are simply boring to me. Who wants to sit at the sound board and manage the dials? (Unless you are a sound engineer, respect!) Give me a situation where there needs to be an urgent fix because I love to analyze, prescribe, and implement strategies that work!

Because of that constant and continual encouragement, coupled with my passion for fixing…I am ready to enter into the consulting realm, but we need a netter name because the term consultant often has negative connotations. Anyone who has ever paid more than they wanted for less than they deserved, blames it on the ‘consultant’. (And I understand why…I’ve seen it before, too). So how about we just say…influencer. It sounds better than management mercenary, right?

I’m pleased to announce the formation of Shawn Storer Strategic Solutions. As an influencer, I can help you with any of your needs in so many areas of expertise. I specialize in a broad range of strategic solutions for your organization and offer expertise in: Culture; Strategy; Learning & Development; Human Resources; Recruitment; Talent Management; Operations; Contact Center; Sales; Customer Experience; Keynote; Guest Speaking; and more!

If you can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel, if you realized the light is a train, or if you just need to dig your own tunnel…call me. I’m here to help!
